A French migrant charity worker said volunteers intercepted 200 people, including children, who attempted to cross the border to the UK in the early hours of Monday One family with two babies were rushed to hospital as they risked catching hypothermia

: “At least 200 people tried to cross and they’ve been stopped by the police or the boat didn’t come.

“I don’t know what about last night but I’ve met some people who stayed five days in the dunes before trying to cross. And that’s why they get wet, because they are staying outside for hours and hours. The latest rescue comes as the Government prepares to set out long-promised legislation on Tuesday that would make asylum claims inadmissible from anyone who travels to the UK on small boats.

Questions have been raised about how any such legislation could be compatible with the European Convention on Human Rights, which obliges governments to consider applications from asylum seekers regardless of how they have entered .
