Temperature readings at O’Hare International Airport hit 86 degrees Sunday, said weather service meteorologist Brett Borchardt. “It’s possible they snuck in even an 87 between the official observations,” he said.A cold front coming off Lake Michigan was already cooling city temperatures off by the midafternoon, with temperatures expected to drop further in the evening. Readings in the 50s were likely by dinnertime, Borchardt said.
Severe thunderstorms were possible within a narrow stretch between Valparaiso and Joliet centered around I-80, Borchardt said.“It’s not a guarantee that storms are going to develop, but if they do they will likely be severe with damaging winds, damaging hail and even flash flooding,” he said. If storms do occur, he said, they are expected to begin after about 7 p.m.
On Twitter, the weather service warned of the possibility of hail capable of denting cars and winds that could down tree limbs or fences. 2:30 PM Update: The green shaded area represents where a localized threat for severe weather exists between 7 PM and 12 AM this evening.
