Find out who the original rock star of samsui woman murals was in this 90-minute tour.

Curious about samsui women? Let The Straits Times take you on this 90-minute walking tour through Chinatown to find some of the most interesting artworks that depict the pioneering construction worker., the Urban Redevelopment Authority and Ministry of Health said in a joint statement on July 10, but they are looking for ways to “mitigate any impact that the mural may have in promoting smoking”.

Singapore-based American artist Sean Dunston’s Samsui Woman At Rest has caused a stir at 297 South Bridge Road. ST PHOTO: ARIFFIN JAMAR 1. Take Exit A at Chinatown MRT station and head to the front of Chinatown Heritage Centre at 48 Pagoda StreetSamsui women are best known for their trademark red headgear, which was used as shelter from the sun when performing manual work outdoors. This sculpture of a sitting samsui woman accentuates the bright headscarf by rendering the rest of the woman in monochrome black.

Here is a sculpture which depicts the samsui woman at work – transporting soil and construction materials using buckets suspended from shoulder poles. She towers above the everyday crowd, moving along to her own pace. It is easy to miss Singaporean pioneer photographer Yip Cheong Fun’s photograph of two samsui women at work – the harsh sun often blots out visibility of the black-and-white photograph reproduction on the glass panel of the Chinatown Visitor Centre. The Cultural Medallion recipient had an ability to capture his subjects in a dramatic tableau, offering a vivid window into a bygone world.

Unlike the youthful visage of the woman in Dunston’s piece, Singaporean artist and former Rediffusion deejay Belinda Low’s rendition is a weather-beaten old woman, her glasses fogged up by the years. In Welcome To The World , a samsui woman sits, cigarette in hand, languishing in her own corner, in a “kiao kar” pose.
