A look back at past old newspaper ads reveals toy trends and the buying frenzy some of them created. Here are a few of the biggest-selling toys of the Christmas season in the 1960s and 1970s.

While there are some toys that are always a hit, a look back at past December issues of the Calgary Herald reveal toy trends and the buying frenzy some of them created.

1964: G.I. Joe was introduced to the world; this ad in the Herald appeared Dec. 4, 1964, from Simpsons-Sears. 1968: The following year, 1968, saw Hot Wheels hit store shelves. More than half a century later, Hot Wheels are still around. This is a Zeller’s ad for the toy cars from Dec. 5, 1968.
