There are 11 former New Jersey high school players who have made their respective teams’ opening night rosters. Laferriere is the lone NHL debut of that group, which includes mainstays in Johnny Gaudreau of Gloucester Catholic , John Carlson of St. Joseph of Metuchen , James van Riemsdyk and Trevor van Riemsdyk of Christian Brothers and Kyle Palmieri of St. Peter’s Prep .
Former Delbarton forward Drew O’Connor was in the opening night lineup for the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second time in his career Tuesday night in the team’s 4-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. He played in 2013-14 and 2014-15 at Delbarton, and previously started the season with Pittsburgh during the 2021-22 season.
Ross Colton, a Stanley Cup champion with the Tampa Bay Lightning and a former Princeton Day player, is now with the Colorado Avalanche after three seasons in Tampa, which included 16 goals and 16 assists in 81 games last winter.
