Behind the increasingly intelligent responses of AI language models like ChatGPT is a large low-wage contract workforce that helps train them.

OpenAI and other tech companies use numerous contract workers to help train artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT.The media house spoke to one such worker — 34-year-old Kansas resident Alexej Savreaux — who has worked as a data labelled and AI trainer for multiple startups, including OpenAI.

He previously worked in several so-called “low-skill” jobs, including as a fast food cook, custodian, and junk hauler.
