Temple University held a memorial tribute on Tuesday for the architect behind some of the most prestigious collections of African American artifacts in the United States. Blockson died in June at the age of 89. His family had a private funeral service for him, but Temple waited until the new school semester started this fall to honor him publicly.

Blockson was a world-renowned historian, award-winning scholar, and prolific author. He was founder and curator emeritus of both the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple University and the Charles L.

Blockson Collection of African-Americana and the African Diaspora at Penn State University, where his trove of nearly a million books, documents, photographs, letters, posters, slave narratives, sheet music, original phonograph recordings, and countless other artifacts provide uniquely comprehensive and intimate perspectives of the African American experience.
