Charles Boone, Gary’s first Black police chief and one of the first Black police chiefs of a major city in the U.S., died Feb. 9 at the age of 91.
Throughout his career, Boone met and protected notable civil rights and Black history figures that visited the city including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and his wife, Coretta Scott King, and singer Nancy Wilson. Boone-Phillips said Coretta Scott King set up a scholarship in honor of Boone.

Boone-Phillips said her father was dedicated to family, both his own and the law enforcement family he served alongside.Current Gary Police Chief Brian Evans recalled Boone’s community relations initiative. Long before DARE programs existed Evans said officers would come to his church when he was a youth and talk about the things like the dangers of drugs and gangs and community safety. He said that program ultimately evolved into the community policing practiced today on a national level.
