'I haven’t reached my ceiling. I have through-the-roof type of potential.' Chad Ryland (C_Ryland38) talked to TDN about the importance of a reliable, effective kicker which NFL teams have shown interest in him, and if “icing” the kicker works. NFLDraft
It may not be the flashiest pick on NFL draft weekend, but kickers are a vital part of the game, and they’ve become even more important over the past couple of seasons. One of this year’s top prospects at the position is former MarylandRyland recently spoke exclusively with The Draft Network about the importance of a reliable, effective kicker at the next level, which teams have shown interest in his services pre-draft, and if “icing” the kicker has an impact on him.
JM: We love hearing that. You actually transferred to Maryland from Eastern Michigan. It worked out great. How do you look back on that decision? Maryland gave me that opportunity to demonstrate my skill at a high level. We play tough road games against Michigan, Penn State, and Wisconsin to name a few. These are big-time games. When you make big kicks on the grandest of stages, everybody pays attention.
I do think there’s a little “want to” when it comes to rising to the occasion, but it’s more about defaulting to your training and what you know. It’s what your body is comfortable with. You can’t just do something on a whim. I don’t want to call it an out-of-body experience, but it’s the muscle memory that goes into kicking. It’s such a repetitive motion. It’s a step-by-step process. It’s mental.
I do think that range is slowly starting to back up as we get bigger, stronger, and faster legs. I don’t want to say more balls, but I hit about the same amount of 50-yard balls as I do a 33-yard extra point throughout my training.
