Cue the chaos!
PHOENIX — What better way to start Game 5 of the National League Championship Series than with an Olympian throwing out the first pitch? That’s right D-backs fans: Michael Phelps will throw out Saturday’s ceremonial first pitch.
Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time – he has 28 medals, including 23 gold medals. Phelps is also an Arizona local. HeREAD MORE: Michael Phelps teaches kids to swim in Peoria Phelps is also the founder of the Michael Phelps Foundation, an organization that provides learn-to-swim, healthy living and goal-setting curriculum to Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Special Olympics International,Phelps isn’t the only big name throwing out first pitches. Amy Van Dyken-Rouen is a six-time Olympic gold medalist and the first American female athlete in history to win four gold medals in a single Olympic Games, which has never been beaten.
The Cardinals have made the State Farm Stadium in Glendale their home turf and the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix is home to both the Suns and the Mercury. The Indoor Football League’s Arizona Rattlers also play at the Footprint. Phoenix has a soccer team with the USL's Phoenix Rising FC. The Valley hosts multiple major sporting events on a yearly basis, including college football's Fiesta Bowl and Cactus Bowl; the PGA Tour’s highest-attended event, the Waste Management Phoenix Open; NASCAR events each spring and fall; and Cactus League Spring Training.
