A new report says the U.S. Census Bureau’s career staffers valiantly conducted the 2020 census under unprecedented challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic.
FILE - A briefcase of a census taker is seen as she knocks on the door of a residence, Aug. 11, 2020, in Winter Park, Fla.While the U.S. Census Bureau valiantly conducted the 2020 census, which determines political power and federal funding, under unprecedented challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, it harmed the resulting data with a new privacy mechanism meant to protect the confidentiality of participants, according to a new report released Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023.
The once-a-decade head count determines how many congressional seats and Electoral College votes each state gets and aids in the distribution of $2.8 trillion in annual spending by the federal government. Other concerns identified by the panel included the widening gap from 2010 to 2020 in the overcounting of non-Hispanic white and Asian residents, and the undercounting of Black and Hispanic residents and American Indians and Alaska Natives on reservations. The gap could cause the undercounted communities to miss out on their fair share of funding and political representation, the report said.
