Cell phone and 911 service has been extended to Wells and a six-kilometre section of Highway 26, previously without service.
People travelling to Wells and Barkerville along Highway 26 will have greater access to cell phone and 911 service along a six-kilometre stretch of the highway, including the Jack-of-Clubs rest area.
The service expansion was announced by the B.C. Ministry of Citizens Services and Telus on Tuesday. Telus received approximately $833,000 in funding for the $980,000 project through the Connecting British Columbia program, administrated by the Northern Development Initiative Trust. "These improvements in our cellular infrastructure will benefit not only the businesses and residents of Wells, but the tens of thousands of visitors to our regional anchor tourism destinations of Barkerville Historic Town and Bowron Lakes Provincial Park," Cariboo Regional District vice-chairperson John Massier said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
The Connecting British Columbia program is part of the province’s larger StrongerBC initiative, aimed at improving economic growth for communities across the province.
