The rare neurological condition can cause painful, debilitating symptoms.
Specialists can use varying tests to diagnose the condition. These include a blood test, a spinal tap , and electromyography . The blood test alone can confirm the diagnosis, per the NIH, because people with stiff person syndrome have elevated levels of an antibody called glutamic acid decarboxylase in their blood.
There is no cure for stiff person syndrome, but certain medications, including pain relievers and muscle relaxants, may improve the symptoms. Dion said she’s throwing herself into her treatments: “I have a great team of doctors working alongside me to help me get better, and I’m working hard with my sports medicine therapist every day to build back my strength and my ability to perform again.” She added that her children have been very supportive and have given her hope.
Though she’s feeling optimistic, Dion said she misses being onstage. “I have to admit it’s been a struggle. All I know is singing,” she said. “It’s what I’ve done all my life, and it’s what I love to do the most. I miss seeing all of you, performing for you. I always give 100% when I do my shows, but my condition is not allowing me to give you that right now.”
She thanked her fans for their encouraging messages on social media, and tearfully ended her message with a temporary goodbye, saying, “I love you guys so much, and I really hope I can see you again real soon.”
