This Black Pound Day and Black History Month we're celebrating the most inspiring women who were trailblazers in their own field, from Dame Linda Hobbs to Sislin Fay Allen
Black Pound Day was started by So Solid Crew member Swiss in June 2020. It’s a “solution-based, community-empowering campaign and motivating endeavour that will leave a better infrastructure for the next generation to walk into”. It occurs on the first Saturday of each month, with a focus on supporting Black owned enterprise.
The month of October is Black History Month in the UK and this year’s national focus is “saluting our sisters”. This year’s narrative plays homage to black women who had contributions ignored, ideas appropriated, and voices silenced. It also provides an opportunity to celebrate these women and their contributions. We have selected 10 black British queens who were trailblazers in their own right - the first women to represent in their respective fields.
Sislin Fay Allen joined the Met Police in 1968 at the age of 29 after working as a nurse in Croydon, south London. She decided to make a career change after seeing a recruitment advert for male and female officers. She served in the Met for four years, first in Croydon then at the Missing Persons Bureau, before moving to Jamaica where she continued to work as a police officer.
