The Cederberg municipality in the Western Cape is on the brink of a political transformation as the residents' association, Cederberg Eerste (CE), partners with the African National Congress (ANC) to form a government of local unity (GLU). This move follows the collapse of CE's previous alliance with the Democratic Alliance (DA), leading to accusations of political maneuvering and concerns about the future of transparent service delivery.

CAPE TOWN - The Cederberg municipality in the Western Cape is poised for a political shift, with the residents' association, Cederberg Eerste (CE), leveraging its one-seat majority to form a new coalition with the African National Congress (ANC).

Following the dissolution of CE's alliance with the Democratic Alliance (DA), the newly formed partners have declared their intention to establish a government of local unity (GLU) to govern the municipality encompassing the towns of Clanwilliam and Citrusdal. However, the DA has expressed strong dissent, alleging that the new alliance poses a significant risk to the provision of transparent, ethical, and efficient public services. This unprecedented political realignment will see Cederberg Eerste, holding four seats, joining forces with the ANC's two seats to assume control of the Cederberg municipality. Khalid Sayed, the spokesperson for the ANC in the Western Cape, confirmed that a formal statement of intent had been signed to jointly govern as a GLU. He attributed the breakdown in cooperation with the DA, which holds three seats, and the Freedom Front Plus, with one seat, to irreconcilable differences, resulting in council dysfunction and jeopardizing service delivery. 'Both the ANC and CE pledge to work tirelessly in the interest of the community, guided by the voices of voters and the principles of unity and inclusivity,' Sayed stated. While he indicated that the two parties remain receptive to incorporating other political parties into their GLU, Tertius Simmers, the provincial leader of the DA, reacted with skepticism. He characterized the new partnership as a political maneuver orchestrated by power-hungry politicians prioritizing their own interests over the needs of residents
