In 2013, Joyce was appointed as the team manager for the Athletics Nova Scotia team at the Canada Games. Joyce was a founding member and team manager for the Truro Lions Track and Field Club from 2008 to 2016. She was appointed to the NSSAF board of governors from 2011 to 2017 and again in 2019-20. During that time, she was a member of the governance review committee and the executive director search and hiring committee.
During his first summer in Truro, Paul and Steve Malick established the Central Nova Legion Legends Track and Field Club so local athletes could train and compete during the summer months. This led to Paul coaching at the Canadian Youth Championships in 1989, 1990 and 1991. In 1997, 2001 and 2012, Paul was a member of the coaching staff for Team Nova Scotia at the Canada Summer Games. He was also a coach with the National Junior Team in 2000.
Paul has been the recipient of the Truro Sports Heritage Coach of the Year Award in 2010 and 2012 and the Athletics Nova Scotia Coach of the Year for 2011 and 2012. He was also a Ricoh Coach of the Year Finalist in 2011. Steve was a key player on the Cougars’ 1989 NSSAF provincial championship team, the most dominant football team in the history of the school. That same year, he was nominated to the All-Canadian team at the Fastball National Championships in Victoria, B.C.
Steve has had one of the most outstanding careers in the sport of football of any former CEC athlete. In 1986, in his first season as a member of the CEC Cougars football team, Brian Johnson was selected as a Metro League All-Star. He was selected as a Metro League All-Star again in 1987 and was the Cougars’ MVP on defense.
In 1991, he was an AUAA All-Star and the SMU MVP on defense. That same year, he was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL. In 1992, Brian was once again a key player on a SMU team that won the Atlantic Bowl and advanced to the finals of the Vanier Cup. To this day, Jim continues to work with the junior curlers at the club. In 1995 and 1996, Jim coached the Meredith Doyle rink to back-to-back NSSAF provincial titles. They almost certainly would have captured a third consecutive provincial championship in 1997, but in that year the NSSAF Championships were held at the same time as the Junior Women’s Nationals.
In 2007, Jim and his three sons became the first family team to ever win the Johnson Cup, a provincial championship event held since 1926. This family tradition of success in the sport of curling has continued to this day with their four grandchildren who have all won provincial championships at some point in their careers.
In 2016, Scott made the jump to the professional ranks joining the Saskatchewan Roughriders as their football operations co-ordinator. His most recent football appointment is as the associate head coach and director of football operations with SMU where he will coach the defensive line for the 2022-23 season.
