The disease was previously only reported in people who travelled abroad but now 86 cases were reported in non-travellers.
The disease is most notably transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female sand flies. The sand fly acquires the parasite when it bites an infected mammal, such as a rodent or another human. The main method of preventing cutaneous leishmaniasis is to stay away from sand flies. Insect repellents, protective clothes, and sleeping in air-conditioned or screen-covered spaces are all effective ways to do this. Decreasing the occurrence of sand fly breeding areas can also aid in the management of the disease.Before the strain’s emergence in the US, cutaneous leishmaniasis occurred mainly in the Middle East, North Africa, South America, and some parts of Asia.
