CDC: More than 300 fall ill during cruise on Galveston-based Princess Cruises ship
Cruise ships are docked at the Port of Galveston, where officials are negotiating for a fourth cruise terminal.became ill with vomiting and diarrhea during their eight-day voyage from Texas to Mexico and back, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
During the Feb. 26 voyage of Princess Cruises' Ruby Princess, 284 passengers and 34 crew members reported becoming ill from the the yet-to-be identified illness. The ship returned to Galveston on Sunday.According to the CDC, the cruise ship attempted to address the outbreak by increasing cleaning and disinfection efforts on the ship and informing travelers about the outbreak among their fellow passengers.
The ship also collected stool samples from sick people and sent them to the CDC to attempt to identify what made them ill. The CDC also sent a team of epidemiologists and environmental health officers to investigate the outbreak.Incidents of gastrointestinal diseases on cruise ships aren't rare and have been tracked by the CDC since 1975.
The Ruby Princess is a new ship to Galveston's cruise lineup. The Princess Cruises ship began sailing from the port in December. Despite the reported outbreak, the ship left on another voyage on Monday and is scheduled for
