The CDC confirmed its first case of human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus in the U.S. on Thursday, involving a husband and wife in Illinois.
As cases of the novel coronavirus known as 2019-nCoV continue to increase — topping 7,700 globally on Thursday — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported a sixth case in the U.S. Unlike the five previous cases — which were contracted abroad — officials say this infection was spread through person-to-person contact on U.S. soil.
CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, MD, added that experts had suspected that the novel coronavirus would likely spread via human-to-human contact. Illinois health officials on the press call also provided an update on the two patients in Chicago, saying that the first patient is doing “quite well” and the second patient is “stable.” Messonnier added that, as of now, only those who recently traveled to Wuhan, China — or are in close contact with someone who did — should be concerned. The main symptoms to look out for are fever, cough and shortness of breath.
