Cleveland lost 120-95 to start this second-round series against Boston. Who's chanting now?
CLEVELAND, Ohio — I’d say be careful what you wish for, but I can’t blame Cavs fans for losing themselves in the excitement of a Game 7 win. I can’t blame them for over-celebrating their team’s first second-round appearance without LeBron James in over 30 years. And I can’t blame them for the misguided chant they started at the end of Sunday’s game against the Magic. But they should’ve known what would follow.
Cleveland is used to this dynamic with the roles reversed. Back in the LeBron era, countless postseason foes aspired to prove themselves against James’ Cavaliers, which made four straight NBA Finals trips from 2014-18. Or at least, they thought they did until they stepped on the court with James and got embarrassed.
Before then? He recorded one during his first 33 playoff games. So the good news is that White will most likely not shoot that well again in this series, if not for the rest of this postseason. But the bad news is Boston might only need one such game from White to dispatch of the Cavs, and he already produced it.Jaylen Brown was the best player in green Tuesday night, which not only helped a lot during a game where Celtics star Jayson Tatum shot just 36.
Mitchell believes in Garland, as evidenced by the rousing pep talk he offered his backcourt mate during Game 7 against the Magic. But Mitchell needs his co-star to start mimicking his playoff performances. Because so far this postseason, if Mitchell lacks a rhythm, odds are that Garland does, too.4. More of first-half Isaac Okoro, please
Cleveland’s ace defender has been tweaking his shooting stroke since he arrived in 2020. And to his credit, Okoro has improved his 3-point percentage every season since turning pro. The next step is to convince playoff opponents that his improvement is real, which would make his offensive presence worth respecting.
Zero. Zilch. Zip. In 28 quarters, never did the Cavs play a period with as much scoring as their first one against Boston. And while that difference in shot making represents a steeper challenge, it’s also much easier on the eyes.
