A big win for the Cavs on Wednesday night keeps them 2.5 games ahead of the Knicks for the 4th seed in the East.
Love, who spent nearly nine years in Cleveland before requesting a contract buyout following a Feb. 15 matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers, did not play in Monday’s narrow win for the Heat against Atlanta because of a rib injury. He was originally listed as questionable for the highly anticipated reunion against his former team.
“It’s one night, but when you look at it, you hope you can sustain it,” Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “Down the stretch, we didn’t get rattled. We made a couple of mistakes, but I thought for the most part, we didn’t let that thing snowball on us and we were able to fix it right away. I do think our guys learned from the last time we played this team, which is always an improvement.”
The Cavs needed almost all of that cushion thanks to a few more late-game blunders, including a defensive breakdown, five-second inbounds turnover, a near-miscue on another inbounds attempt and a missed free throw. Garland, who called Love a big brother and mentor in the days leading up to the game, finished with a team-high 25 points and seven assists. Four other players -- Donovan Mitchell , Allen , Mobley and Okoro also reached double figures. Allen also pulled down a game-high 12 boards, recording his team-leading 29th double-double.
The Heat were led by Jimmy Butler, who poured in 28 points. Tyler Herro added 22. Love finished with eight points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes. He played just two seconds in the fourth quarter.
