He said the skeleton was located about eight meters underwater, about one third of a mile into the cave system. Mr del Rio, who has worked with the National Institute of Anthropology and History on projects in the past, said he has notified the institute of the discovery. But Mr del Rio said on Tuesday that institute archaeologist Carmen Rojas told him the site is registered and will be investigated by the institute’s Quintana Roo state branch Holocene Archaeology Project.
Octavio Del Rio, a diver and archaeologist, walks outside the start of the Guardianes cave, a flooded cavern that stretches for miles underneath the path of the planned Maya Train in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo state, Mexico The most controversial stretch cuts a more than 68-mile swath through the jungle between the resorts of Cancun and Tulum.
