Pope Francis recently blasted the “backwardness” of conservative Roman Catholics across the United States during World Youth Day celebrations in Lisbon.
that God made man and woman for marriage, and same-sex attraction is a sin.
In a statement, the diocese said: “It has taken existing guidance and practice in matters of sex, sexuality and gender identity and developed them into a formal policy, rooted in scripture and Church teaching, to help ensure that these matters are addressed in a consistent, pastorally sound and authentically Catholic manner across our diocesan and parish institutions and schools.”
The issue in Cleveland, however, has disappointed at least one priest, who says the policy contradicts Jesus’ teaching. The priest, who spoke to cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer on the condition of anonymity, said he learned of the policy when it was emailed to priests, deacons, ministers and religious education leaders earlier this month.
“While some schools had policies in place, others did not. Individual situations were arising that underscored a need for a single policy which that states church teaching and provides consistent application of that teaching across all our schools,” David Perda, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Worcester diocese, said in a statement.
Its website says that the Catholic Church “encourages individuals to accept their own bodies and gender as they were created.”
