The church, whose name means"our lady of victory," was dedicated in 1858 after a congregation had been established twelve years before. Its original stone structure was enlarged in 1918. It remains to be seen when services will continue in the church, as it pointed to the nearby Kapalua Sacred Hearts Mission Church in another post for its members that still want to hear mass. The Washington Examiner has reached out to Maria Lanakila for comment.
"The only Church still standing and untouched," Sacred Hearts captioned a picture of the Maria Lanakila."May Maria Lanakila be a beacon of light for those in Lahaina." "The Catholic church I go to in Maui, Maria Lanakila is still standing. There are videos showing that all of the surrounding areas are decimated," one user Anne Guignon wrote in a post."I can't even imagine how much this means to the Lahaina community. Through the years this amazing faith community has offered so spent many peaceful moments to so many."Two of the four total fires have been 100% contained, according to Maui officials.
