Maggie Gyllenhaal talks about life in New York City, Father's Day and a part she's aching to play.
When he was a little boy, Joseph Carr loved to sit in his father’s garage and listen to stories. His father, Joseph “aka Josh” was a lumber jack who would tinker away there. “People would come in and tell stories about their families and their lives,” shares Carr. “For my father, the garage was his American dream and he got to achieve that.”
Last year, Josh Cellars, which sources wines from across several California wine growing regions, sold over two million cases. The wines are named after Carr’s father, who passed away before seeing his son’s wine business thrive. This Father’s Day Carr honored his father and all fathers by creating a special Father’s Day pop up in Grand Central Station. The pop up is decorated with items from both his and his father’s garages.
Maggie Gyllenhaal stopped by to help host the Josh Cellars pop up. We got to catch up with her there. My husband, [Peter Sarsgaard], is a little bit of a Father's Day Grinch. He will be away on Sunday. So we are going to celebrate Saturday. I think how we are often given orchids as gifts. But they die. My husband is an excellent, knowledgeable gardener. He has sometimes gotten orchids to come back to life. And he was just realizing what they need, that they don’t want to be potted.
I'm a real Chekhov fan and have done a lot of Chekhov. I played Masha. I played Yelena. I was just thinking, am I too young to play Madame Ranevskaya in? It's on my mind. She is usually played by an actress who is a little bit older than me. But I think she's probably not meant to be older. I'm 41 and interested in that part. She reminds me a little bit of my mother.
