Cash-in-Transit Workers' Impending Strike Raises Concerns Over ATM Cash Shortages; Union Calls for Safety Measures, Industry Expresses Worry.
A potential strike within South Africa’s cash-in-transit sector may lead to cash shortages in the country’s automated teller machines. If the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration approves the Motor Transport Workers Union request for a picketing certificate, this could lead to a protected strike, potentially leading to the outcome above.
“From an economic perspective, anything to do with transport would have an impact on supply chain, with cash-in-transit being a vital part of the economy. “Banks will suffer major cashflow disruptions, leading to credit risks. Any supply chain disruptions, including ATMs, causes major losses, normally incurred by businesses and consumers, if not addressed,” said Kirsten.
“The impact will be similar to the logistical disruptions at Transnet, impacting on the costs of doing business and hitting consumers.”
