Casey Review: Met must listen to Black community says police scrutiny boss by LeahMahon_
Met Commissioner said he felt"shame and anger" after the Met was labelled institutionally racist, sexist and homophobic
The shocking report has now concluded that the Met is still suffering from institutional racism, sexism and homophobia and cannot “police itself” in one of the most scathing reviews of its 200-year history. Ms Johnson, whose board critiques the College of Policing’s Police Race Action Plan, added that Met’s engagement with diverse communities is failing in being “differential” and that “lots of communication was one way”.
She said: “My report makes clear that, on top of the unimaginable crimes of individuals and the shocking series of events that have hit the service in recent years, the way in which the Met has responded to them is also a symptom of a wider malaise in an organisation that has fundamentally lost its way.
Female officers were understood to be “traded like cattle” to work in different departments depending on which male officer found them attractive with one reporting that she was sent to work with a colleague who was known to like young Black women. He argued that the problems in the Met were “systemic” rather than “institutional” despite Baroness Casey’s findings and the lasting legacy of the Machpherson report. “I absolutely accept the diagnosis that Louise Casey comes up with. We have racists, misogynists and homophobes in the organisation. And it’s not just about individuals. We have systemic failings, management failings and cultural failings.
Ms Johnson said that Sir Rowley’s refusal to accept that racist, sexist and homophobic culture exists in the force “proves her [Baroness Casey’s] point” and “undermines” the findings. Sir Rowley’s denial comes after Greater Manchester Police’s chief constable, Stephen Watson, also rejected claims of institutional racism after a race equality report commissioned by Mayor Andy Burnham discovered that Black communities in Manchester were disproportionately policed.
