Garcia: President Jimmy Carter’s complexity and toughness often lost in saint-like image

Carter told the LBJ Library attendees the familiar story of how he pulled victory from the jaws of diplomatic defeat at the 1978 Camp David summit with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. “I was bawling. It’s how you reference that leadership. That what we’re doing, yes, means what’s happening now. But it’s not just about the now. It’s about our kids and it’s about our grand kids.”
While Carter’s essential decency and commitment to service are undeniable, in his political prime he was a much tougher and more complex figure than the one being honored right now.
