‘People have been spilling beer on this wood for over 160 years’

A Rick Kelly guitar is more than a guitar. It’s a masterpiece, and a piece of history. It’s guit-art.

Mann chronicles a week in the life of 42 Carmine St., whose denizens include Kelly, his mom and Cindy Hulej, a 20-something artist who creates exquisite designs and also runs the shop’s Instagram account. “I don’t do computers,” says Kelly. Mann’s style is a little square – the way Jim Jarmusch or Charlie Sexton just happens into the store while the cameras are rolling is a little clunky, as is the fact that many of Kelly’s visitors seem prepared with doc-style questions to ask him about his work. But it’s a forgivable stylistic tic, especially given the anecdotes that flow forth.
