Carlos Alcaraz stuns Novak Djokovic in Wimbledon thriller to end 10-year Centre Court unbeaten run
This was the third instalment of Alcaraz-Djokovic but the first in a final and the first on grass, both having previously won on the clay – Alcaraz in Madrid last year, Djokovic at the French Open last month.
The stars are well practiced at remaining neutral, but overall support favoured Alcaraz from the off and the first calls of “Vamos!” came in the very first game when the Spaniard brought up break point, but Djokovic settled and crucially held to avoid the worst possible start. But Djokovic then made no mistake in his following service game, with his near-silent celebration when taking the first set more unnerving than if he had roared. He was locked in, and Alcaraz had to improve if he was to break this trance.
Djokovic again toyed with the crowd after winning another thrilling exchange to make it 5-5, the Serbian rating their reaction with a “so-so” gesture after many got out their seats to applaud his play.
