Police said his driving was of such a poor and reckless standard that he hit a young motorcyclist who could easily have been killed
A career criminal who has a previous 150 convictions for multiple crimes, including violence, drugs and motoring offences, has been jailed after speeding away from police and hitting a motorcyclist. During the early hours of October 6, 2021, Jason Collins, pulled out of a junction without looking and crashed into a motorcyclist in Sutton In Ashfield.
The motorcyclist was hurtled into the air, and the then Collins, 46, sped away and left the victim for dead. The collision was out of the sight of officers as due to the speed Collins was travelling at they were some distance behind.The impact from the collision caused serious damage to Collins' vehicle and his victim sustained multiple bone fractures. Unaware of the collision officers caught up with Collins and pursued him until he abandoned his Vauxhall Vectra and ran into an address.
It was heard in court that the victim suffered “long lasting” injuries and has experienced flashbacks from the incident. During his police interview, Collins, of Stanton Hill, Sutton-in-Ashfield, had tried to convince officers that someone else had been driving and that he was in the passenger seat. A judge told him he will serve half of the sentence in prison and the rest in the community on licence. Collins was also disqualified from driving for three years, which takes will take effect in a year’s time to reflect the time he will spend in custody.
