Rebecca Welch should have checked on Amelia Rose every 10 minutes but didn't

A mental health support worker who falsified that she had carried out observations on a patient who took her own life has been sent to prison. Rebecca Welch should have - but failed to - carry out checks every 10 minutes on Amelia Rose when the 31-year-old, of Mapperley, was staying at the Millbrook Mental health Unit at Kings Mill Hospital.

“The inquest showed that Nottingham NHS Trust and especially Rebecca Welch failed to keep promises that resulted in her death. Do these people know or even care about the heartbreak they cause when they don't do their job properly? Handing mother-of-one Welch, of Laurel Close, Shirebrook a 12-month jail sentence, Judge James Sampson said: “Amelia was admired, respected and loved. She was a talented musician and nothing this court can say or do can possibly compensate for the loss of Amelia and the grief suffered by her family and friends.

The prosecutor said on the day of her death, January 31, 2020, Welch had been tasked with carrying out observations on the room she was in but failed to do so and instead was found sitting in a staff room. The prosecutor said: “The staff are supposed to make sure patients are safe and a proper log of the observations should have been completed accurately and they are not allowed to make entries in advance.
