Photographing both bioluminescence and the creature emitting the light is not easy. A new ScienceVisuals blog explores the technical skill set and hardware needed to create remarkable underwater images.
Working—or just existing—underwater complicates the senses. Sound is blunted, colors fade quickly, verbally communicating beyond grunts and hums is no longer possible. Your own relationship to gravity feels like it changes, and your field of view is constantly obscured by a whirling trail of bubbles.
Photographing both bioluminescence and the creature emitting the light is not easy. Images need to be captured at different exposures. That is, the shutter has to stay open for 10 to 20 seconds to pick up the faint bioluminescent light, but short bursts are required to freeze the animals themselves in position.
When Dorhn first started to develop his system, scientists were already studying ostracods and their bioluminescent displays. However, it was done with a rudimentary system using a camera that recorded to VHS tapes and night vision binoculars. Enclosed in a waterproof housing that was lowered to the desired location, the system produced grainy images that were stored on a system that degrades over time.
Learn more about the courtship displays and how studying these ostracods may give us a unique glimpse into evolutionary biology.
