Timeslip Captain America is almost a parody.
As part of Marvel Comics' experimental Timeslip project in the 1990s, a host of the company's characters were reconceptualized by prominent artists of the decade. Among them was Captain America, whose opulent, over-the-top patriotic design by artist Keith Giffen seemingly strives to embody everything the character's haters see him as.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Captain America, as a character concept, has understandably come under greater scrutiny in the past several years, more so than ever in the character's history. However, it was nearly twenty-five years ago that a two-page spread in Marvel Vision magazine presented readers with the most extreme version of the character, one that revels in nationalistic glory, showing how far the concept of Captain America could truly be taken.
Timeslip Captain America Is The Character At His Most Over-the-Top Marvel's Timeslip initiative was something of a counterfactual exercise – the commissioned artists were tasked with imagining they were the artist on hand when Stan Lee first conceived of his famous character. As the text page reads: "It's 1963 again...and Stan Lee just had a new idea!" In Iron Man's case, artist Keith Giffen was tasked with re-envisioning the character for Timeslip.
Keith Giffen's Captain America Makes The Regular Version Seem Understated With an American flag bandanna covering the top half of his face, the bottom half turned in a dramatic scowl, over a stubble-covered chin, Timeslip Captain America relentlessly symbolizes everything that detractors of the character accuse other portrayals of representing. While the legacy of Captain America is complex, the Timeslip version is simple – all text, and little subtext.
Timeslip offered a wide variety of changes to classic Marvel characters – from tragically redefining Quicksilver and Magneto's relatonship, to making Doctor Octopus and actual Octopus, to giving one of the company's earliest heroes an alternate origin story.
