Cape Town has long been a safe haven for seafarers, earning the affectionate title of ‘Tavern of the Seas’,This summer, the modern cruise terminal at the V&A Waterfront will become even more inviting with the arrival of a new ship. Norwegian Cruise Line is set to return to South African waters in November, kicking off a new cruise season with itineraries on two vessels: the Norwegian Dawn and the Norwegian Sky, which will make her South African debut.

While cruising in Cape Town is typically limited to the summer months due to the city’s winter weather, the industry has seen significant growth over the past decade. MSC Cruises initially led the way in local cruise offerings, but more international cruise lines are now recognising the advantages of home-berthing in South Africa for the summer.

Last season, the Cape Town Cruise Terminal welcomed 70 ships, and this year promises another exciting lineup. NCL plans to provide a variety of longer itineraries, ranging from 11 to 21 days, with departures from both Cape Town and Port Louis, Mauritius. The NCL season will run from November 2024 to May 2025, including repositioning cruises to and from Europe.

‘Travelers can explore more of Southern Africa while enjoying a beach holiday in Mauritius, which remains a top destination for South Africans,’ said Kevin Bubolz, VP and Managing Director for Continental Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. ‘Alternatively, guests can start their journey in Mauritius and return home via our cruises, visiting stunning locations like Reunion, Madagascar, Mozambique, and other beautiful ports along the South African coast before disembarking in Cape Town.’
