The City of Cape Town (CoCT) will cease sending printed municipal bills via the South African Post Office by the end of 2025, moving towards a fully paperless billing system. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on traditional postal services, mitigate delivery risks, and promote environmental sustainability. Residents and businesses are encouraged to switch to email billing by submitting requests to the city. Those without email access will be supported through the city's call center.
The City of Cape Town will stop sending printed municipal bills to residents and businesses via the South African Post Office at the end of the year., the metro announced its years-long paperless billing campaign had resulted in over 430,000 accounts receiving their bills by email.
Mayoral committee member for finance, Siseko Mbandezi, said it was important for the metro to reduce the risk associated with using the South African postal service and bills not being delivered. To switch from physical posted mail to email, municipal account holders must send a request to the city, either with an email toThe message must include an account number and email address for receiving future bills.
The paperless drive for municipal accounts is one of several initiatives the CoCT has undertaken to become more tech-savvy in recent years.
