Tayla Fransman is the oldest learner at the school and the only matriculant – but that just made her principal even more determined to give her a send-off she'll never forget. | YouMagazine

Tayla Fransman at the school dance that was thrown especially for her.

Even though her school, Perpetua House, doesn't have Grade 12, they recently hosted a special Takkies and Tiaras-themed night especially for her. Tayla is the oldest learner at the school and Carolynn Greaves, principal at Perpetua House, says they didn't hesitate to host an end-of-school party especially for her.

“Some of the children were severely autistic or experienced other issues where they were non-verbal. Even though she could speak, she stopped talking,” Charlene says. “It did a lot of damage.” A few years ago, her life changed drastically after her parents learnt about Perpetua where learners are taught numeracy, literacy, natural sciences, social sciences and life skills. Older learners also have the opportunity to do job-shadowing and get involved in the community, with help from the school.

Carolynn, who’s been in education for over 20 years, says that although teaching children with various learning abilities can sometimes tough, it’s also incredibly rewarding. “These children are my chicken soup. They're good for the soul, but they make you cry at times, it’s the nature of the beast."

Making sure the pupils at Perpetua feel seen and included was part of the reason they hosted the party for Tayla.
