The popular Sevens Series tournament in the Mother City is reportedly not part of World Rugby’s plans to cut several host cities next season.

, Cape Town will remain on the Sevens calendar when the circuit is reduced from 11 legs to seven from the 2023-24 campaign.

It is understood that as one of South Africa’s most attractive tourist destinations, the coastal city can expect to avoid the cull, but the host cities that are at risk are Singapore, Hamilton, Sydney, Toulouse and Los Angeles. In November, World Rugby announced major changes to the Sevens Series, notably cutting the number of teams and events as the governing body looks to embrace a ‘sportainment’ approach.

From December next year, the number of men’s sides will be reduced from 16 to 12 and the number of tournaments dropped, to coincide with the 2024 Paris Olympics and Women’s Sevens Series.
