As the weather cools down, here are a few of Cape Town 's most chilling stories. Built in 1796, Tokai Manor House was considered the most impressive home on the Cape Peninsula. Designed by French architect Louis Michel Thibault, the manor resembles a scene from a vintage horror film with its grand pillars, winding staircases, and sweeping lawns.
Petrus Michiel Eksteen, known for his love of parties, is said to haunt the premises on horseback. A dare gone wrong, attempting to ride his horse up the stairs into the manor's dining room, tragically resulted in Eksteen and his equestrian companion's demise. Now, these spectral figures reportedly wander the forest, reattempting their dangerous stunt. Rust en Vreugd, built in 1778 for a member of the Dutch East India Company, Willem Cornelis Boers, is another dwelling with a dark history. Visitors and staff report encounters with a ghostly woman who glides through the first floor, floating between rooms. Another feminine apparition is spotted peering at visitors from windows, sending shivers down their spines. Some have even claimed to feel their shoulders tapped, only to turn around and find no one there. The building's Die Donker Gat (Dark Hole), formerly a torture chamber, is said to be a breeding ground for disembodied voices, shadowy figures, and the sound of footsteps. The Castle, dating back to 1666 and originally known as the VOC Fort, is also reputed to be home to two resident ghosts. Lady Anne Barnard, a prominent socialite, resided in the castle during her lifetime and death seemingly could not tear her away. She is said to still entertain guests and tend to visitors, fulfilling the role she once held in life. Another ghostly resident is Governor Pieter Gysbert van Noodt. During his life, he was responsible for sentencing prisoners to hang. Now, allegedly cursed by a prisoner destined for the gallows, the governor roams the castle as a menacing, two-meter-tall shadowy apparition. L'Ormarins Estate, built in 1715, offers a haunting story tinged with sadness rather than fear. In the 1800s, the Cloete family briefly owned the estate. One of the daughters, Elsa, is reported to haunt the home. Elsa fell in love with a British soldier during her lifetime, a forbidden romance that resulted in the soldier's suicide and Elsa's death from a broken heart
