Tenants in the City of Cape Town are paying their landlords’ municipal debt through prepaid recharges.
The City of Cape Town has a unique method of collecting municipal debt: it recovers outstanding rates and services through deductions on prepaid electricity recharges.
The metro has a sliding scale for these deductions. Depending on the property’s value, it can deduct between 30% and 90%., Cape Town mayoral committee member for energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg, said the metro will only deduct electricity units in specific scenarios. Limberg agrees that this isn’t exactly fair but says it is necessary to help sustain municipal services.
They must receive the key revision number rollover update before 24 November 2024, or their meters will no longer accept electricity tokens from that date.
