A fire that tore through Madiba Square in Imizamo Yethu, Cape Town on Sunday night, 26 March 2023, has resulted in the destruction of around 60 homes and the displacement of 200 people:

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service was informed of the blaze in Hout Bay just after 7pm and immediately dispatched a team of 18 firefighting resources and 70 personnel to the scene.

The rescue mission was delayed when the firefighting crews were met by a hostile crowd and illegal parking of cars that obstructed access to the fire services. As a result, Law Enforcement and the South African Police Service had to be called to restore order. The Cty’s Disaster Risk Management team will assess the scale of the damage, determine the number of individuals impacted, and offer recommendations regarding the repair or replacement of necessary services.
