Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education cleaner Darlene Sullivan, right, and teacher aid Mallory Axworthy, both from Sydney, rally outside of Sydney-Membertou MLA Derek Mombourquette's office on Kings Road as part of a day of action for CUPE's education workers on Tuesday.
Rallies took place in front of the offices of Derek Mombourquette , Kendra Coombes , John White , Fred Tilley , Keith Bain and Brian Comer between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., coinciding with a province-wide day of action.On Tuesday, CUPE school support workers across the province voted 97.5 per cent in favour of taking strike action if an agreement that improves wages cannot be reached.
“Education workers’ pay is now worth nearly 10 per cent less than it was a decade ago, and prices have only gone up.”Most CUPE education workers, the union noted, earn less than the province’s median wage of $35,000 per year
