The current Port Hastings rotary. The changeover from the current rotary setup has been talked about for more than a decade. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTPORT HASTINGS — The senior designer with Nova Scotia’s Department of Public Works hopes a proposed revision to the design of a Port Hastings roundabout will emphasize safer and easier access for highway traffic as well as emergency service vehicles.
Boddy said it would be far too costly at the moment to even consider upgrading or replacing the causeway swing bridge. So the alternative would be to, from the Cape Breton side, allow for an extra lane of traffic along Trans-Canada Highway 104 westbound should the bridge open up for larger boats to cross through the causeway. One complaint Boddy heard repeatedly about the previous plans was limited access for emergency vehicles.
Keith Boddy, senior designer with Nova Scotia’s Department of Public Works:"The primary focus has been safety, No. 1." SALTWIRE NETWORK - CONTRIBUTEDThe other major component of the revised design had to do with traffic flow, particularly for motorists travelling between Port Hawkesbury and along Route 19.
Shelby Scott of Port Hawkesbury:"There’s just too many turns in this design." CONTRIBUTED - CONTRIBUTEDThe changeover from the current rotary setup has been talked about for more than a decade, but construction work began taking shape within the last year when both the previous Liberal government and current Houston government each unveiled their five-year highway improvement plans.
Scott said she liked the idea of an overpass that crosses Route 4, but the 26-year-old added she preferred keeping the rotary mainly as is. So far, Boddy said, the price tag for the revised design could reach between $10 million and $15 million but may be subject to changes.• Route 4 westbound: Relocating the entry onto the TCH 105 from opposite the Skye Lodge to near the Cape Breton Souvenir Shop parking lot.
