An information session on the progress of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital expansion took place Thursday night at the Joan Harriss Pavilion in Sydney. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY — As work continues on the Cape Breton Regional Hospital expansion, at least two residents wonder whether the project is meeting its designated timelines.
“I came here to find those answers out. And one person gave me one answer, sent me to an architect who gave me a different answer, then sent to me to a designer after that. So what are the right answers? I never got those.” Both men believe the project is meeting its milestone deadlines, though the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought in some unwanted delays. There are also tender packages that have gone out or soon to expire, including one for the clinical services building’s “civil, foundation, structure and elevators,” which closes on Dec. 1.
“You get to a point where everything’s closed in and you don’t see work happening, but in fact it’s a beehive of activity inside,” he said. “Hospitals are very complex buildings; to build every wall is full of something, so there’s a lot of work that has to go on inside.”As for whether the regional hospital expansion is meeting its budget targets, or running over budget, LeCouter and Goodine didn’t get into specifics.
