“The central theme of the song, for us, is thinking about the history of how long the Wash Brook has been a problem and inviting people to come together to be part of the solution,” said Jen Cooper, habitat restoration lead with ACAP Cape Breton. “They sent back to us a bunch of material to us — including this song recorded in the 1940s,” she said.OLD COUNCIL TRANSCRIPTS
“This buffer in the Wash Brook is home to muskrats and snapping turtles but according to interviews with elders from the community, was once home to nesting red wing black birds and rich frog populations when it used to function as more of a wetland than a lawn,” ACAP Cape Breton said in a statement.
“There’s a role where art and music can play as a way to connect with other people on an issue such as this,” Aiken said.
