Cape Breton Eagles defenceman Tomas Lavoie was one of the more brighter sides to the Eagles' disappointing 2021-22 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season. He was taken first overall by the team in July. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY, N.S. — With restrictions in place as the calendar turned to January 2022, the Cape Breton sports community didn’t know what to expect as the COVID-19 pandemic continued to rage across the province.

One story which dominated the headlines throughout the winter was the difficult season for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Cape Breton Eagles. The Eagles are this year’s sports story of the year. After a month-long search for a new head coach, the team hired American Chadd Cassidy to be their bench boss in January, the same month they elected to trade Connor Trenholm and Dawson Stairs to Saint John and Charlottetown respectively at the winter trade period.

Lavoie came to Cape Breton for the draft and put on the Eagles jersey. Today, he’s in the Eagles lineup and gaining valuable experience in the league. He’s expected to be an impact player on the team in the years to come. The Cape Breton Capers men's soccer team won their sixth straight Atlantic University Sport championship in November in Sydney. It was part of the highlights from Cape Breton University athletics in 2022. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POST. - Jeremy FraserThe Capers athletics success each year cannot be ignored. From success on the pitch to student-athletes winning major awards and even a historic moment for Cape Breton University were among the achievements.

In the fall, the Capers soccer program continued its success, both finishing first overall in the AUS standings and winning their respective league titles. The teams advanced to the U Sports nationals, the men in Kamloops and the women in Quebec City. Despite not winning a medal, Wong kept many Cape Breton hockey fans interested in the women’s division, along with the Canadian team who went on to win the gold medal.

The fight went the full 10-round distance and went to the judge’s scorecard, which ultimately saw a split decision victory for the Sydney Forks boxer. After the fight, Rozicki himself admitted he thought Peralta should have won. The Jim McEachern-coached Sooners hosted the Baseball Canada Senior Men’s National Championship at the Susan McEachern Memorial Ball Park in Sydney and the Gerry Marsh Ball Field in New Waterford. It was the first time the event was ever held on the island.
