This map from the National Hurricane Center shows hurricane Fiona tracking to hit landfall in Cape Breton on Saturday morning. Allister Aalders/SaltWire NetworkSYDNEY — People in Cape Breton are being warned to brace for the worst as hurricane Fiona bears down on Atlantic Canada.
“If it’s post-tropical, it’s still going to bring winds of hurricane force as well very heavy rain and very strong coastal impacts such as large waves, the potential for storm surge and maybe in some cases coastal flooding,” he said. “So whether it’s post-tropical or not on its approach, I don’t want people to get too hung up on that because regardless it’s expected to be a very significant storm.
“If the winds are from the northeast, we’re just going to move across the harbour in the lee of the wind. And if the wind changes again, then we’ll come back here,” he explained. “So we’re looking very much right now as the message to the community and the message to everyone across Cape Breton is to prepare — to prepare today and continue to prepare tomorrow for a very intense event on Friday evening into Saturday.”
