The trade of Riley Stillman at the NHL trade deadline in late February left the Vancouver Canucks in an unusual position.
When Stillman joined the Canucks at the beginning of the season, Horvat didn’t have an alternate. Stillman said it was an easy choice for him to offer to help. Teammates like Luke Schenn — who was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs a couple days after Stillman was shipped out — and Tyler Myers had been PA reps in the past, but didn’t have time to fill the role.
“How about Delia,” Burroughs smiled, nodding over at the well-read goaltender, who went to Merrimack College in Massachusetts. The lack of enthusiasm speaks to a long-standing issue for NHL hockey players, that the players only get engaged with labour issues when collective bargaining rears its head. Otherwise they keep their heads well-buried in the sand.
