The Canucks\u0027 goalie prospect was sensational for Latvia at the IIHF World Championships. Full\u002Dtime NHLer next?
Coming into this season, Silovs’ task was clear — make the most of however many starts he was handed as part of a two-goalie tandem with veteran Collin Delia.needing some time to re-set himself into the Ian Clark method of goaltending, Silovs got an early run of starts this season, the kind of load he hadn’t faced since before the pandemic began.
He struggled for consistency through the first six weeks of the season, which in another season might have meant that he would lose starts to his veteran crease partner, but then Delia was called up to the NHL in early December to fill in for the injured Thatcher Demko.Article contentIn the AHL, Silovs’s end-of-season numbers were solid — a 90.9 save percentage and a 23-15-9 record.
That brilliant run was broken up by a handful of NHL starts, where he performed capably, each start better than the one before. He made five NHL starts in all, winning three. Latvia’s previous best finish at a world championship was seventh. This year, playing at home in Riga, the Latvians channeled the energy of their passionate fans.
