The season’s final Canucks Prospects Tracker include updates on Tyler Madden, Jack Rathbone, Jett Woo and more.
It’s the latest — and last — edition of the weekly tracker this season, where we tally up the efforts of the Vancouver Canucks’ highest-profile prospects:Madden’s Northeastern Huskies bowed out in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday, losing 5-1 to Cornell in a game the Big Red dominated from the outset.
Madden came up clutch again and again this season — scoring the OT winner against top-ranked UMass in a regular season clash, scoring the OT winner to send his team to the Beanpot final, and showing every bit of skill and hard work in between. “He had a good year, but still needs to get physically stronger,” Canucks GM Jim Benning told Postmedia’s Ben Kuzma of the 5-foot-11, 150 pound Deerfield Beach, Fla. native.Rathbone’s Harvard hockey squad were buried 4-0 by top-ranked UMass on Friday, marking the end of a standout season for the freshman.
— Evan Oppenheimer March 28, 2019Yet, the chemistry shown by Fox and Rathbone is tantalizing to Canucks fans, as the Carolina Hurricanes first-rounder has spurned the NHL club’s contract offer to return to Harvard instead for another season, meaning he will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2020 should he not sign with the team sooner than that.
But it was an aberration to an otherwise excellent campaign in which the 2018 4th-rounder combined his slick skating game, booming point shot and nose for the nice play to vault himself into relevancy. It was an odd end to an exceptional season for Woo, who played his brand of tough, smart defence while surprisingly shooting up the WHL scoring charts for defencemen.
There’s still lots of developing to do for Woo, who will most likely join the struggling Utica Comets for a handful of games to close out their moribund AHL season. ICYMI: The @UticaComets lost three more forwards to injury, as well as the game in a 6-2 defeat at the hands of Syracuse yesterday. @CanucksArmy has your post-game report https://t.co/jtkVja17sL
— Comets Cory March 31, 2019There were still some positive developments on the farm, with defencemen Ashton Sautner and Guillaume Brisebois making strides and getting called up to the big club, but next season will be judged by how the young forwards, most notably Kole Lind and Jonah Gadjovich, progress.
The Canucks’ 2016 3rd-rounder missed most of his sophomore season with a shoulder injury, so it’s not surprising the 20-year-old feels the need to hone his game for one more year before turning pro.
